Music Profile : Stone Mecca
Hey guys, this is my music profile on a group called Stone Mecca. They are super underrated and underexposed but arn't those usually the best types of music? I'm not going to lie, whenever I discover and underatted artist or group it's like finding a buried piece of treasure. You marvel at the fact that you are the only one that knows of it's existence and if gives you a secret satisfaction. Anyways I discovered this group's music while watching Afro Samurai ( Like I said, huge anime/ manga fan) and I just loved their music from there. They are also affiliated with RZA of the wutang-clan who also happened to produce the score for the show. They are funk/ soul/ R&B band based in Los Angeles, California. They have an album that came out in 2007 called Fist Contact. My personal favourites from them are from Afro Samurai called A Walk and Oh. Support good music people. If you love R&B/Soul/ Funk then you might love them. Their harmonizing is also amazing. I'm going to post some videos of their music down below. Enjoy!

Born this Way
So I tuned into the "Born this Way" Episode of Glee yesterday. The episode was about accepting insecurities and the pressure to look "pretty". It starts of with Rachel breaking her nose when Finn accidently bumps into her while dancing in "Booty Camp". This prompts her to think about plastic surgery when she is told that it will improve her voice, with Quinns nose as her "nosespiration".
What I really like about this episode is the fact that it touches on something that is always continuously overlooked within our society. The pressure to look "pretty" or "perfect, especially concerning women. These messages of perfection and changing the things that make you different to this day continue to be perpectuated in the media. Many messages subtly exploit insecurities in order to sell products. Pictures in magazines and on billboards are digitally retouched and enhanced in order to look "perfect" distorting reality and fooling young women into trying to achieve an image of beauty that is unhealthy and impossible. Another thing to consider is how this image effects many women of ethnic origin. Tina (she's asian) is called a hypocrite when she tells Rachel she shouldn't go along with the surgery yet she is wearing colour contacts. In the media there is a severe underepresentation of women of different races and ethnic origins. Living in Canada, the belief is that we live in a multicultural society that is accepting of many different cultures, races and other ethnic origins but if you look on the billboards and store windows you see the same monolithic images of beauty. Asian, Indian, black and especially native women continue to be underepressented sometimes to the extent of non existence. Tina then goes to say that since she does not see any asian sex symbols in the media that she's going to become her own, and I think that is a mind state that a lot of women should consider. Instead of trying to always look like what is acceptable because we don't see ourselves in the magazines and billboards we should become our own models and inspirations. Everytime we do something to change ourselves to appease others we only accepth that they are right, and we should indeed change the things that makes us unique and different. There are so many surgeries out there that try to enhance the way that we look, or change the way we look. Many asian women doing the eyelid surgery so that their eyes would "look like everyone else" many people bleaching their skin to look brighter. Why? Why do we live in a society that loves to make us all the same. Why can't we just except everyone the way that they are. No matter what skin colour, hair texture, shape of eyes nose lips etc we are all special and unique in our own way, so why change that? At the end of the day it's 2011 and it's time to take back the meaning of beauty that was stolen from us by the media. We should aim to love ourselves instead of running to the next plastic surgery office who won't hesitate to change us at for a pretty penny. Anyways watching this episode inspired me to the write this and moral is to love yourself and not buy in to what other people think we should change. Always think for yourself and remember to be the change that you want to see in the world.

Movie Review : Spirited Away

Hey those who read this blog. I know I havn't blogged in a while and I'm sorry for that. Sometimes I really and truly don't know what to say which is why I don't blog everyday, though I wish I could. Anyways in this post I am going to review a movie that I've been wanting to see and saw yesterday called Spirited Away. For those of you that don't know by now I am a crazy anime/ manga fan and I heard that this movie was really good so I decided to watch it. It won the Academy Award in 2003 for best Animated Picture which is another reason I wanted to watch it .The movie is about a young girl named Chihiro who ends up in a magical world when her and her parents get distracted and go inside a mysterious tunnel. When they go inside the parents think they have stumbled upon and abandoned amusement park, but of course there is more than what meets the eye. When the hungry parents smell food in the distance they follow the scent hoping to be fed. When they find the source of the food they begin to eat voracious amounts of it. Chihiro refuses to eat the food, and later on she discovers that her parents have been turned into pigs. It turns out the place is not an abandoned amusement park but a bathhouse for spirits. With the help of a new friend named Haku it is up to Chihiro to find a way to turn her parents back to humans and return to the human world.
This movie is a story of courage and bravery I personally loved the movie. I thought that it was well crafted and very cute. Anime movies rarely disappoint when it comes to graphics and animation. There were parts of the movie that were amazing to watch and enjoy visually. I loved the character of Chihoro and how she starts out looking like a frail, scared girl but ends the movie looking brave and couragous. I give this movie 4.5/5.

It's Just Lipstick Dipstick
I am a huge sucker for colour. I love bold colours . A lot of people say that black women can't were bold colours and shades but I don't believe that's true. All colours come in multiple shades, pigments and hues. It's only a matter of finding shades that will match your skin tone and look nice on you. Colour is endless and limitless and the same concept should be applied to women of different shades and colours. If you feel bold don't limit yourself to just naturals and nudes all the time. Spice things up! Here are a couple of examples.

Mac Ruby Woo $17.50 CAD

Viva La Glam Cyndi $17.50 CAD

Cherry $15.50 CAD
Even fuller lips can carry off bolder shades
I Love RED!
Pretty Pinks
Bold Seductive Reds
I love how she does whatever the hell she wants withe her style!
