My Senior Prom
On May 28th, 2010 I had my school prom. Isn't it something that we all look for when we go to High School? Our school prom? The limo ,the glam of the make-up, hair, shoes, accessories, dress, tuxedo corsage and all that other stuff? I know that I did. I don't know why but watching too much television has brainwashed the way that I look at Prom. When I was younger I thought that prom was this huge deal, like if you didn't go you had a serious problem. But thinking of the reality of it now, maybe prom isn't all that big a deal. Is breaking the bank really all that necessary, especially just for one night? I think that my high expectations to have an excellent prom, partly conditioned from watching too much television, made me wish I can do it all again. I must say that all of my graduating classmates looked amazing. I only wish that a few things could change if I were to go back in time. Starting with the food. I don't know if it's just me, but I have learned that my stomach can never get used to banquet hall food. I found the chicken to be a bit under cooked and the steak overcooked till it was dry. I think I tricked myself into feeling full, because I didn't understand how hungry I was until I got home and my stomach was growling. The music was definitely below my expectations that night. I was expecting to dance the night away on the dance floor but the DJ was HORRIBLE! They played several songs twice and the songs that you would expect to get the place jumping they didn't play. They were playing majority techno ( this is not to offend any techno fans. I enjoy a bit of techno here and there from time to time) which ruined it for me because techno is something that I feel you can't really dance to. If they weren't playing techno, they were playing songs that were relevant, back when I was in fifth grade. I found myself sitting down a lot and even sleeping! Maybe I was more sleep deprived preparing for prom than I actually thought, but I do know if they were playing good songs I would be on the dance floor jamming and not at my table drifting asleep. We ended the night with the most over exaggerated and over played song relating to graduation. You guessed it, it was indeed "Graduation (Friends Forever)" by Vitamin C. Majority of the graduates formed a circle and swayed to the song and ended it with the most enormous group hug known to man, which somewhat ended the prom a a sad note. When it comes down to it, Prom shouldn't be all about the glam, flashy dress or tux or how huge your limo is. It's about enjoying a night with fellow graduates. Having fun and taking pictures and basking in the moment. Who knows where we will be in a couple of years from now, which is why it is important to cherish the present. That is what I took away from my senior prom.

Music and Writing
Listening to music is more that just a hobby. It's become a part of who I am. I can't go through the day without getting my usual dose of music. I live and breathe music. I feel it down in my soul and my spirit when I'm listening to a certain song. I feel the piano, the violin and the guitar which I play at home. There is something about playing my guitar that just makes me feel so at peace. When it's just me and my guitar and I'm strumming a couple of chords and coming up with lyrics to go with the song, I feel so serene. I feel like I can just be alone with my thoughts for once and give myself time to sort through a lot of stressful thoughts and feelings that I might have about a lot of things going on in my life. Life is so stressful with school, parents and a lot of other things. When It's just me with my music,I feel like for those couple of seconds, I can just breathe and relax and escape from reality for a while. The same goes for writing. I've been writing for as long as I can remember. I love to write. It's such a great way of catharsis. Instead of bottling up all of my emotions inside I try to vent them through different mediums of writing, especially through poetry and songwriting. I'm a dictionary junkie and I love expanding my vocabulary and coming up with the perfect words to put in a song or a poem. I try to write as much as possible, because poetry is also a way for me to keep memories. In the future I'll look back at a couple of my poems and think "Wow! I can't believe I actually felt that way about this person". When you think about it, a lot of great and successful songs come from the telling of life experiences relating to love, loss, friendship and other things. It's a great way to release emotions in an artistic and healthy way. I plan on one day creating an anthology of all of my poems. That is one of my goals in life. Diary writing is also great too. It's a beautiful way to keep record of the things that are going on in your life and a way to vent all of your deepest secrets, fears, anxieties and frustrations that you sometimes don't feel ready to tell any friends or family members. For those of you who are very stressed, or you are just looking for a new hobby you should try writing or learning to play a musical instrument or any other way of artistic expression. It's not only shows your creative side, it's also liberating.

A couple things to think about.
Music is so therapeutic for me. There are sometimes when I feel that I may be obsessed with music. When I'm going through a hard ship or a lot of stress I vent all of it through the music I listen to and the songs that I write. We live in a society that is so full of stress causing agents. Students working hard to get good grades so that they can get into good their University of choice. Procrastinating, stay up all night with a white screen in front of them typing away at their computer with a cup of coffee right next to them trying hard not to to fall asleeep. Then we have adults putting in 9-5 shifts at work then coming home to cook dinner or pick up their kids from day care or school only to do the same thing over again. Where is the time to relax? Where is the time to just unwind with a good book or pick out your favourite CD from a catalogue and put it on and just listen to it for a while. With the life that we live we all need that. We all just need time to feed into our hobbies, and I'm not talking about spending hours on facebook or twitter. I'm talking about getting goals accomplished that are self fulfilling, like perhaps learning hot to play a musical instrument. Writing poetry, a story, a screenplay of even a song. Take that vacation to that exotic place that you can't stop thinking about. Go rock climbing or learn to speak a language that you really want to become fluent in. Life is to short to spend it living like a lifeless zombie that is just trying to get through life. When was the last time you made it belong to you. That for a couple of minutes or even hours, you did what you wanted to do. These are just a couple things to think about.
The Crazyness going on in Jamaica
Jamaica is such a beautiful country. I can't believe that all this madness is happening right now. All of this because of one drug kingpin that Bruce Golding ( The Prime Minister) doesn't want to extradite to the US. Many worry that he may have already fled the country. The stupidest part is that a lot of innocent young citizens are being killed over him due to the violence between the gangs trying to protect the king pin and the Jamaican security forces who are seraching for him. This whole situation is now known as a "Sate of emergency". Many people question whether the Jamaican Labour party, or Bruce Golding himself, may have associations with Christian Coke ( The drug king pin) but he denies all of this. If he in deed does have a special realtionship with him, I find this to be very sickening. A lot of innocent people have been killed because of this man. I personally am of Jamaican decent with Jamaican parents who were born and raised in the country. It breaks there heart to see that a country of such beauty is being taken over by such disgusting violence that has already claimed the lives of a lot of people. I remeber before I went down there 2 summers ago, I was afraid to go beacause of the amount of violence that I heard was taking place. A lot of my family members currently are afraid of going down there. All of this bloodshed and violence is sickening and it's affecting not only my parents, but a lot of Jamaicans living her in Canada who are desperate to get in touch with their families to see if they are safe. I really hope that Bruce Golding will do his job and put an end to all of this. How many more lives must be taken before he actually does something about it? For those of you that want to explore this more, here is a link to an article by CBC

The Blind Side
I recently saw the Blind Side this past Sunday. I must say that I really enjoyed it. Sandra was amazing in the movie and she totally deserved the oscar for it. For those of you that don't know, the Blind Side is a story about a young man named Michael (or big Mic, you'll see why when you watch it) who is being passed around from foster home to foster home because his mother is unable to take care of him and a woman by the name of LeAnne (played by Bullock) takes notice of this young boy and decides to take him into her family and take care of him as her own son. The chemistry between all of the characters was really touching and if you are a football fan you might also enjoy the movie. What I really love about this movie is the morals of it. How it puts emphasis on the human condition. A person taking care of another person regardless of race of culture. Mother's taking care of the babies that often get left behind.

New Alicia Keys Song
Un-thinkable (I'm ready) by: Alicia Keys has become my new song. It's a nice smooth R&B song with powerful chords and beautiful lyrics. It's about two people who are obviously in love with each other but are afraid to do the "un-thinkable" by becoming a couple. For those of you who are big Chad Michael Murray fans he plays Alicia's lover in the video. There's a really powerful message behind it if you watch closely. This song has got me thinking about interracial love in today's society. I mean, why is it such a big deal? In the end, we're all human beings so why do people feel so much hate when they just happen to see someone walking down the street holding hands with someone of another race? We're in the year 2010 for god sakes, and it's these prejudicial attitudes that are making it hard to move forward. Falling in love is the human condition and we should feel free to date, have relations, and fall in love with anyone that we choose without feeling people starring at us like we're a "traitor" or something. For example, family members giving you the stink eye just because you bring someone to dinner that isn't of the same race. We can't help that we grew up in an environment full of diversity. Seeing interracial couples has become so common to me that it makes no difference. Love is love and life is too short to sacrifice our happiness trying to please and make amends with people's prejudicial and ancient thoughts about love and who we are to love. That's what I took away from this song. For those of you that want to check out the video here it a link. Miss Alicia Keys has done it again.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HhuGQUZJot8
